Large models made by stitching together TINs can look a bit like a patch-work quilt because of changes in lighting between the stereo pairs. When the TIN is made there is a choice to make the texture from either one of the pair or from both. Playing with the PI3000/ImageMaster feature for texture mapping I discovered that although only one TIN can be selected, it is possible select many photos and choose one for colour balancing. Clearly there has to be at least one from the stero-pair, but another can be used to colour match using the colour ajust feature. I developed the flow below.

Data>Texture>Texture mapping Tick Color Adjustment OK Choose 2nd photo to balance new texture
However, on revisting this I'm now not sure it always works. Some TINs (on the edge of a model) seem to need both photos of the stereo pair and don't allow matching from a third. Sometimes 'balanced, textures seem to work but not always. Am I missing something? Please could someone provide advice on this feature?
A similar problem arises for orthophoto generaton, where the final mosaic is poorly integrated with respect to various lighting conditions on the separate photos that have been stitched together (patch work quilt). The color match routine is sometimes helpful, but more often than not this routine will reduce overall orhto photo quality with washed out areas that have been lightened too far...or overly darken other areas that were fine to begin with. For the best results I've found that a good final product can only be achieved by tweaking each photo separately in a photo editor to get the best overall lighting match based on several trial iterations of orthophoto generation.
A much more difficult problem is controlling which parts of a stereo pair get used in the final orthophoto. It would be very helpful to understand how the software chooses the parts of different photos to be used. Although I take care to construct polyline outlines only around sharply defined areas within a stereo pair, invariably the software will pick slivers or panels of a photograph at the extreme edge or corner, outside of the outline, where the image is fuzzy or distorted (common with wide angle lenses). Sometimes I can force ImageMaster to use different areas of a photo by redoing the TIN boundaries or by not selecting one half of a stereo pair, but the results are unpredictable...it seems that most of the time both halves of a stereo pair are required for a fully extended orthophoto that covers the original polyline outline (although, logically, this shouldn't be the case). I suppose another workaround for this problem might be to generate orthophotos of single stereo pairs only, then reassemble them by hand in a photo editor or AutoCAD, but this is so time consuming that I haven't tried it yet...
